The Top Three Questions People Ask Before Installing Granite Countertops

Home & Garden Blog

When going through a kitchen renovation, many homeowners come across the dilemma of which type of material to use for the countertops. One of the more popular choices is granite. However, not many people realize that granite countertops have many benefits and find themselves asking these three questions:

Can Granite Be Cut On?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. Sealing your granite countertops will allow you to cut directly on the surface, plus it will provide additional protection as well. However, granite is extremely solid and hard. While this is a good thing for countertops, it's not good for your knives because they will become dull. If you want to cut directly on the countertops, granite is a good material for this, especially if you only plan to cut one thing and don't want the hassle of taking out the cutting board and cleaning it. Just bear in mind that it's not ideal if you have a nice knife set.

Can Granite be Scratched?

Another question homeowners ask is whether or not the granite countertops will develop scratches over time. The huge benefit of granite is that it is one of the strongest and hardest naturally occurring materials in the world, which means it cannot be easily scratched. The only thing that can scratch granite is a material that is harder and stronger than itself, which would be something like diamonds. Since you don't likely use diamonds in your kitchen, you don't have to worry about anything scratching your granite countertops.

Can Granite Develop Stains?

Finally, another common question is whether or not the granite countertops will easily develop stains. The answer to this is that, yes it can stain because it is a porous material, but this cannot happen with a durable sealant treatment. This is why it's important to hire a professional to install the granite with a sealant that is going to prevent stains. To further protect against stains, you should have the granite resealed every once in a while, as well as clean up spills as soon as they occur.

When you know the answer to these top three questions, you can better understand why granite is probably one of the best materials for kitchen countertops. Not only are they easy to maintain, but they provide a beautiful and natural appearance in any home that you can enjoy for many years to come.
