Key Broken In The Lock? Learn What To Do And How To Avoid It

Home & Garden Blog

If a key breaks inside a lock, it can feel extremely infuriating. Not only will you be worried about the broken key, but you might have concerns that you won't be able to get inside the door. While the scenario is not one you'd want to find yourself in, there is a way through.

Broken Key

If the key breaks, your primary goal should be to retrieve the fragments from the lock and to do so as soon as possible. The longer the broken piece stays inside the lock, the more likely it is to damage the lock or even prevent you from being able to open or close the door. If the key fragment is sticking out far enough, use your hands to remove it.

If you can't, you can also use a small pair of tweezers to do so. However, the most important thing for you not to do is to use force. If you cannot clearly see the pieces of the keys, don't force it. If you do so, you are more likely to cause damage to the lock, that will require you to replace the key and the lock.

Prevention

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to avoid this type of issue; here are some of them.

Replace Damaged Keys

If you notice any of your keys that look like they are breaking apart or are damaged otherwise, you need to go ahead and replace them. A common reason why keys break inside locks is that the key is damaged, to begin with. If you replace the key early, you can avoid this issue.

Lubricate Locks

If you notice that it's hard to fit your key inside the lock or it's not turning easily, you should probably lubricate the locks. In certain climates, rust and corrosion can set up inside the locks and cause issues with the key, and even cause it to snap. You can easily find a lock lubricating product and apply it to the lock whenever you notice this issue.

Use Keys for Locks

Make sure you only use your keys to lock and unlock the door. Your keys should not be used as screwdrivers, bottle openers, or for any other tasks. All of these activities put unnecessary wear on a key and can alter its shape, which might make it more likely to break inside the lock.

If you find yourself facing this unfortunate scenario, the most important thing to remember is that a locksmith can help. While there are some things you can do in the immediate aftermath, you need to call on the assistance of a locksmith to fully correct the issue.
