Maintain Your Gutters with These 4 Tasks

Home & Garden Blog

An effective gutter funnels rainwater away from your house, which protects your roof, walls, and foundation. However, you do need to perform regular gutter maintenance so your gutters can do their job. Here are four important tasks you need to do for proper gutter maintenance:

1. Clean your gutters regularly.

Over time, gutters can accumulate leaves and twigs from nearby trees, in addition to dirt and other debris deposited by the wind and rain. Birds even build their nests in gutters occasionally. If your gutter is full of debris, it can't channel water effectively. Clean your gutters at least twice a year to keep them clean and functional. If you're uncomfortable with climbing on a ladder to do this, you can contact a gutter cleaning service to do it for you.

2. Install gutter guards.

Sometimes cleaning your gutter is difficult, especially if you live in a home with multiple levels. In this case, gutter guards can cut down on the amount of cleaning you need to do. Gutter guards are metal or plastic grates that fit over the top of your gutters. They prevent large debris from falling into your gutter, which helps to keep them clear. While gutter guards mean you won't have to clean your gutters as often, you should still remove the guards and clean away mold that may start to accumulate over time.

3. Inspect your gutters for signs of damage.

Cracks, mildew, and mold are all signs of gutter damage. Since your gutter comes in contact with moisture so often, it's more susceptible to water damage. Check your gutter for signs of damage at least once a month. If you experience any major storms, you should check your gutter afterward to make sure strong winds and heavy rains didn't cause any damage or loosen the fastenings.

4. Replace your gutter if necessary.

If your gutter is worn and cracked, leaving it alone may save you money immediately. However, failing to replace a broken gutter will cost you more in the long run. If you're a busy person, rest assured that you don't need to do the replacement work yourself. Contact a residential gutter installation service. They can remove your old gutter and install a new one. Be ready with a brand new gutter the next time it rains.

Don't fall victim to avoidable flooding; protect your home from water damage by looking after your gutters. Proper gutter maintenance will allow your gutters to last longer and function more efficiently.
